Marjan Nazifi is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Macquarie University and the Course Director for the Bachelor of Economics program. Her primary fields of research are energy and environmental economics, with a focus on the linkages between carbon emissions and energy markets. She teaches a range of economics subjects, including Principles of Economics, a large first-year unit, and a Professional and Community Engagement unit that incorporates industry partner participation. Nazifi holds two PhDs in economics: her first from Allameh Tabataba’i University, one of Iran’s premier institutions, after which she served as Senior Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs. She subsequently completed a second PhD at Macquarie University examining carbon emissions and energy market dynamics.
Nazifi has published extensively in high-impact international journals such as Energy Economics and Energy Policy. Notable publications include 'Policy design amid unexpected socioeconomic drivers of household cleantech investments' (Energy Policy, 2026), 'Persistent energy poverty for renters motivates policy reform' (Energy Economics, 2025), 'Carbon pricing impacts on four pollutants: A cross-country analysis' (Energies, 2024), 'Emission intensities in the Australian National Electricity Market – An econometric analysis' (Energy Economics, 2024), and 'Analyzing electric vehicle uptake based on actual household distributions: A contribution to empirical policy formulation' (Transport Policy, 2023). She has produced 14 research outputs, including a book and a meeting abstract. At Macquarie University's Transforming Energy Markets Research Centre, she leads the Carbon Emissions, Capture and Storage theme and serves as Co-Director. Her contributions inform policy on carbon pricing, renewable energy transitions, and emission reductions. Nazifi was a finalist in the 2023 Macquarie University Academic Staff Awards for innovative teaching practices developed with Professor David Orsmond and received a successful academic promotion in 2023.
