Maria Chilvers is a part-time teaching lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, College of Health, at Adelaide University. Her academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Nursing (coursework), Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Renal), and Postgraduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing. These credentials support her roles in nursing education, particularly in renal nursing and critical care. Previously at the University of South Australia prior to the merger into Adelaide University, Chilvers coordinates theoretical components of nursing programs and delivers key courses.
Chilvers' research centers on symptom assessment and management for patients with end-stage kidney disease. She authored the corresponding paper 'Dyspnoea Assessment in Adults with End-Stage Kidney Disease Receiving Dialysis: An Integrative Review' published in 2020 in the Journal of Renal Care. Collaborating with Kylie Johnston, Katia Ferrar, and Marie T. Williams from the School of Health Sciences, University of South Australia, the review synthesizes evidence on dyspnoea evaluation tools and practices in dialysis settings, identifying clinical gaps. As a PhD candidate at the University of South Australia, her thesis investigates 'Exploring the experience of breathlessness for people living with kidney failure.' She has served as an external supervisor for PhD students, including a 2021 project on patient activation in self-care for symptom burden. Chilvers received the Student Nominated Excellent Educator Award, recognizing her teaching impact. She contributes to courses including Becoming a Nursing Professional, Health of Older Adults, Experiential Learning Activity: Foundation Practicum 1, Educational Assessment for Health Professionals, and Teaching and Learning Strategies for Health Professional Educators. Additionally, she is a trained reviewer in the Summative Peer Review of Teaching program and listed among personnel in the IIMPACT research group focused on health implementation and translation.
