Dr Marco Rizzi is Associate Professor in the UWA Law School, serving as Co-Director of the Centre for Health Law and Policy, Graduate Research Coordinator, and President of the UWA Academic Staff Association. He earned his LLB (Hons) and LLM from the University of Pisa, LLM and PhD from the European University Institute, and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching from the University of Western Australia. His academic career includes Senior Lecturer at UWA Law School from 2018 to 2022, Deputy Head of School (Students) from 2022 to 2024, Head of the Department of Law at the University of Seychelles from 2015 to 2017, and Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Seychelles/University of London from 2014 to 2017. Prior roles encompass Legal Advisor at LexJus Sinacta in Florence (2009-2011), Visiting Fellow at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (2011), Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley School of Law (2012), and Trainer for Judges at the EUI Centre for Judicial Cooperation (2013-2014).
Rizzi teaches Torts, Health Law & Policy, and Risk Regulation at UWA. His research focuses on Tort Law, Health Law & Policy, Risk Regulation, Regulatory Theory, and Law & Technology, particularly the regulation of therapeutic goods, medical liability, vaccine policy, and risk regulation. Notable publications include Connecting with Australian Tort Law (3rd ed., 2026, with K. Offer, J. Walvisch & J. Davis), Risk - New Trajectories in Law (2026), "A comprehensive review of the childhood vaccination landscape in Malaysia" (2025, with N. K. Kamaruzaman & K. Attwell), "Appraising vaccine injury compensation schemes in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic: A Comparative Analysis of the United States, United Kingdom and Australia" (2025, with D. Fairgrieve & S. Halabi), and "Civil Liability for AI Clinical Tools in Western Australia: A Critical Overview" (2025, with K. Y. Chin & M. Blake). He has received the Law School Mid-Career Research Award (2025), Commendation Award in Research Impact and Innovation (2022), Excellence in Teaching Award (2022), and Law School Early-Career Research Award (2022). Rizzi holds significant service roles, including Elected Member of the UWA Academic Board, Staff Union Representative on the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee, former Member of the Human Research Ethics Committee, and positions in the Australasian Association of Bioethics & Health Law and International Rare Disease Research Consortium.
