Professor Marcello Trovati is a Professor in Data Science in the Department of Computer Science at Edge Hill University, a position he has held since 2020, after serving as Reader in Computer Science there from 2016 to 2020. His previous appointments include Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Derby from 2013 to 2016, Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Control Engineering at Coventry University from 2011 to 2013, Researcher at IBM Research Dublin from 2008 to 2011, and Software Developer and Algorithm Tester at Portrait Software from 2007 to 2008. Trovati earned his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Exeter in 2007, an MA Single Honours in Mathematics (First Class) from the University of Aberdeen in 2002, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education from Coventry University in 2013. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2013 and a Member of the British Computer Society.
Trovati's research specializations encompass data science, big data, data and text mining, artificial intelligence, and mathematical modelling. His expertise is evidenced by approximately 100 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and conferences, predominantly as lead author. Key contributions include the authored book Guide to Computational Modelling for Decision Processes: Theory, Algorithms, Techniques and Applications (Springer, 2017) and edited volumes Big-Data Analytics and Cloud Computing: Theory, Algorithms and Applications (Springer, 2016) and Guide to Security Assurance for Cloud Computing (Springer, 2016). Prominent journal articles are Statistical exploratory analysis of mask-fill reproduction operators of Genetic Algorithms (Applied Soft Computing, 2021), PERMS: An efficient rescue route planning system in disasters (Applied Soft Computing, 2021), Logistic Regression Multinomial for Arrhythmia Detection (International Journal of Distributed Systems and Technologies, 2017), and An entropy based approach to real-time information extraction for industry 4.0 (IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, 2019). He has obtained research funding over £1 million as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator. Trovati is Editor-in-Chief of Applied Artificial Intelligence (Taylor & Francis), serves on boards of other journals, is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, a Chartered Mathematician, and has given keynote speeches at international conferences and chaired workshop panels.
