Manjul Bhargava is the Robert C. Gunning *55 and R. Brandon Fradd ’83 Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University. He earned an A.B. in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1996 and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton University in 2001, with a dissertation titled “Higher composition laws” completed under the supervision of Andrew Wiles. Following postdoctoral positions at the Institute for Advanced Study and Harvard University, he joined the Princeton faculty as a full professor in 2003. Bhargava also holds the position of Stieltjes Professor of Number Theory at Leiden University and adjunct professorships at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and the University of Hyderabad. His primary research interests lie in number theory, representation theory, and arithmetic geometry, including the study of integer values taken by quadratic forms, composition laws on spaces of higher-degree forms, and rational points on elliptic curves.
Bhargava received the Fields Medal in 2014 for developing powerful new methods in the geometry of numbers applied to counting rings of small rank and bounding the average rank of elliptic curves. Additional honors include election to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2013, the Cole Prize in Number Theory in 2008, the Fermat Prize in 2011, the Infosys Prize in 2012, the Padma Bhushan in 2015, and fellowship in the Royal Society in 2019. He was a Clay Mathematics Institute Research Fellow from 2000 to 2005 and has served on various academic committees. His contributions have advanced the understanding of number fields, class groups, and elliptic curves through parametrizations and asymptotic results.
