Dr. Man Djun Lee served as a lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department within the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia. He earned his PhD in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering from University Malaysia Sarawak in 2017. During his appointment from February 2021 to late 2023, he focused on research aligned with sustainable engineering solutions relevant to Malaysia's agro-industrial sector.
Man Djun Lee's research specializations center on renewable energy extraction, wastewater treatment using agricultural waste, and innovative biomass utilization. He received a Gold Medal at the International Virtual Expo of Innovation Product and System Design 2023 (INVIDE2023) for his invention 'Sustainable Papermaking with Oil Palm Frond Biomass'. This project develops a method to enhance recycled paper strength by blending oil palm frond fiber with newspaper pulp, countering hornification effects. Testing involved three fiber loading percentages, assessing tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and fiber morphology via scanning electron microscopy. Key publications include 'Performance of Oil Palm Frond Fiber as Filtration Material in Palm Oil Mill Effluent Treatment' (2021, IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science), demonstrating filtration capabilities for palm oil mill effluent; 'Modelling the Energy Extraction from Low-Velocity Stream Water by Small Scale Archimedes Screw Turbine' (2021, Journal of King Saud University - Engineering Sciences), optimizing hydropower from low-flow streams; 'Ground Rod Interlinks with Iron versus Copper' (2021, Journal of The Institution of Engineers (India): Series B), comparing materials for electrical grounding; and 'Design and Development of a Small-Scale Archimedes Screw Turbine' (2020, IEEE International Conference on Automatic Control and Intelligent Systems). Additional works cover wood modification challenges for plantation eucalyptus (2021) and physical-mechanical properties of boron-treated light red meranti (2024). As Ir. Ts. Dr., a registered professional and chartered engineer, his contributions advance sustainable manufacturing and environmental technologies.
