Dr. Malcolm Burt serves as Manager of the Production Team in the Learning Design and Innovation Directorate at CQUniversity, where he functions as a researcher and lecturer with expertise in video production, disruptive media, and project management. He holds a PhD from Queensland University of Technology (2020) titled 'What makes an ideal virtual reality amusement experience?', a Master of Fine Arts (Research) from QUT (2016) that included the documentary 'Signature Attraction' exploring the existence of rollercoasters, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Graduate Certificate in Management, and Diploma in Film and Television Production. Affiliated with the Centre for Research in Equity and Advancement of Teaching & Education (CREATE) in the Empower cluster and the Creative Arts Research Training Academy (CARTA), Burt's research interests include communication technology and digital media studies, film and television, and interactive media, particularly virtual reality experiences, education, and thrill rides. His career encompasses tutoring roles at QUT (2018-2019) in Media Audiences and Architecture and the City, CQUniversity (2012-2014) in Digital Video and Audio Production, and Queensland School of Film and Television (2002-2010), where he devised curricula for sound, video, documentary, and television production courses. He has produced broadcast television series for SBS and ABC TV and delivered two TEDx talks with over 50 media interviews.
Burt has secured project funding including $70,000 from CQUniversity for the Countdown to Uni Moodle course easing student transitions, $15,000 from Lund University for Virtual Theme Park development (2018-2019), $5,000 from Griffith University for VR Geography virtual field trip (2016), and $5,000 QUT PhD international travel grant (2016). A key publication is 'Countdown to CQUniversity: An Analysis of a Student-Driven Program Designed to Help Students Transition to University Before They Start University' (2026). Through his multimedia production skills, Burt supports educational project dissemination and publicizes outcomes, bridging academia and media to advance learning innovations at CQUniversity.
