Great Professor!
Luke Russell is Professor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Discipline of Philosophy in the School of Humanities. He obtained his BA (Hons) and PhD in philosophy from the University of Sydney, with his PhD awarded in 2002 on the topic of normativity in epistemology and ethics. After briefly teaching at Macquarie University, Russell joined the University of Sydney faculty, where he delivers courses in ethics, critical thinking, undergraduate philosophy, high school philosophy, and subjects at the University of Sydney Business School. He has held significant leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of Philosophy from 2021 to 2022 and current Honours Coordinator. Additionally, he hosts the University of Sydney podcast 'The Philosophy of Living Well,' featuring discussions on ethics and human flourishing with leading philosophers.
Russell's research specializes in moral philosophy, particularly the concepts of evil, forgiveness, virtue, and vice. He has developed influential secular accounts of evil and forgiveness. His key publications include books such as Evil: A Philosophical Investigation (Oxford University Press, 2014), which presents a novel analysis of evil actions and persons; Evil: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2022), examining philosophical arguments for and against the reality of evil; and Being Evil: A Philosophical Perspective (Oxford University Press, 2020). Prominent articles published in top journals like the Australasian Journal of Philosophy feature 'Is evil action qualitatively distinct from ordinary wrongdoing?' (2007), 'Evil-revivalism versus evil-skepticism' (2006), 'Dispositional accounts of evil personhood' (2010), and 'Forgiving while punishing' (2016). These works have received notable citations and contributed to ongoing debates in ethical theory.
