Dr. Luke Lee is Professor of Civil Engineering in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of the Pacific, where he has served on the faculty since 2008. He holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego (2005), an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley (1998), and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (1997). Prior to joining the University of the Pacific, he taught at Louisiana Tech University. A registered Professional Engineer in the State of Louisiana, Lee's primary teaching areas include structural design, engineering mechanics, structural analysis, and engineering risk analysis. He is recognized for pioneering the flipped classroom model in his mechanics of materials course, where students watch instructional videos outside class and engage in active, problem-based learning during sessions. Additionally, he maintains a YouTube channel, Structure Free, offering step-by-step engineering tutorials that support his students and a broader audience.
Lee's academic interests and research specializations encompass FRP composite materials, infrastructure rehabilitation, engineering education, infrastructure renewal, durability of FRP composites, structural health monitoring, and risk assessment of engineered systems. He has co-authored and edited key publications, including Materials for Civil Engineering: Properties and Applications in Infrastructure with H. Estrada (McGraw-Hill Education, 2020), Introduction to Earthquake Engineering with H. Estrada (CRC Press, 2017), Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites for Infrastructure Applications – Focusing on Innovation, Technology Implementation, and Sustainability edited with R. Jain (Springer, 2012), and Service Life Estimation and Extension of Civil Engineering Structures edited with V.M. Karbhari (Woodhead Publishing, 2011). His peer-reviewed papers cover topics such as effective engineering video tutorials (Journal of Online Engineering Education, 2018), evaluation of flipped classrooms (ASEE Annual Conference, 2015), and properties of CNT-loaded epoxy resins (SCIREA Journal of Materials, 2018).
