Louise Fleming, PhD, MSN-Ed, RN, FAAN, serves as Clinical Associate Faculty in the Doctoral Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing within Health Science. Previously, she held the roles of Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Division and Programs, overseeing the Accelerated BSN and BSN programs. A registered nurse since 1998, she has clinical experience in hospital critical care, emergency medicine, and intensive care units. Fleming earned her PhD in Nursing from UNC Chapel Hill in 2016, Master of Science in Nursing Education from Duke University, baccalaureate degrees from the University of South Carolina and Clemson University, and holds a DNP credential.
Her research specializations include family and parental management of chronic pediatric conditions, such as adrenal crisis in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and family management in Down syndrome. She conducted studies at Duke University and UNC School of Nursing, developing educational tools like a training video, mobile health application, and brochures for adrenal crisis prevention and management. Key publications are "How the Child's Gender Matters for Families Having a Child Diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia" (2017), "Parental Management of Adrenal Crisis in Children with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia" (2017), "Management of Childhood Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia: An Integrative Review of the Literature" (2017), and "Measurement of Family Management in Families of Individuals With Down Syndrome: A Cross-Cultural Investigation" (2021). Fleming speaks nationally and internationally on family management of CAH, innovates undergraduate capstone clinical experiences with community partners, and led academic-practice partnerships during COVID-19, transitioning clinicals to simulations for timely graduation of nearly 200 nurses. Major awards include Great 100 North Carolina Nurses of 2020, UNC Nursing Faculty of the Year, Cynthia Davis Sculco Scholarship (2015-2016), AACN Elevating Leaders in Academic Nursing Fellow, 2026 ACC Academic Leaders Network Fellow, and Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She served on the UNC Committee on Fixed-Term Faculty (2019-2021), CARES Foundation Board of Trustees as Vice Chair, and published an op-ed "Which Way to Go?" in USA Today Magazine (2017).
