About Louise

Louise Conwell, MBBS(HonsI) PGCert MEd (Dundee) FRACP PhD, graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and Medical Science, and completed her Doctor of Philosophy there. She trained in paediatrics at the Mater Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, and in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane concurrently with her PhD. She furthered her expertise through a post-specialty clinical fellowship in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at The Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, Canada. Currently, she is Senior Staff Specialist (Eminent) in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Children’s Health Queensland. Since June 2018, she has served as Head of the Children’s Health Queensland Clinical Unit in the School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Queensland, and as Acting Head of the Mayne Academy of Paediatrics. She works within multidisciplinary teams managing neonates, children, and adolescents with diverse endocrine disorders, including in the endocrine oncology clinic linked to the After Cancer Therapy Service.

Her research focuses on congenital hyperinsulinism and beta-cell disorders such as Type 1 and monogenic diabetes, disorders of sexual differentiation, endocrine oncology, insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk in obese children and adolescents, and evidence-based medicine. Notable publications include Cochrane systematic reviews on probiotics for preventing gestational diabetes (2014, with Barrett et al.) and bisphosphonates for osteoporosis in cystic fibrosis (2014, with Chang), alongside studies on 18Fluoro-dihydroxy phenylalanine positron emission tomography/computed tomography scanning for congenital hyperinsulinism (2015), whole-exome sequencing for pediatric disorders of insulin secretion (2018, with Johnson et al.), and international guidelines for hyperinsulinism diagnosis and management (2023). Conwell leads professionally as President (past Secretary) of the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group since serving on Council in 2017, co-chair of the Congenital Hyperinsulinism International Collaborative Research Network for care guidelines and centres of excellence, and Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group representative on the International Consortium of Pediatric Endocrinology, co-chairing its Intersociety Clinical Guidelines Committee. She supervises Royal Australasian College of Physicians paediatric trainees and University of Queensland postgraduate higher degree research students, contributing to committees on diabetes, disorders of sexual differentiation, and cancer survivorship.
