Professor Lorraine Farrelly serves as the Founding Professor and Head of the York School of Architecture at the University of York since September 2023. She leads the school in developing sustainable, solutions-based, and environmentally responsible design, emphasizing responsible design that prioritizes society and connects architects with communities for sustainable cities and public spaces. Her research specializations encompass architecture and urban design, architecture and community consultation, architecture education pedagogy, and architectural design studio pedagogies, with a focus on listening to local communities about the future of their towns and cities. At York, she coordinates key undergraduate modules, including First Year Studio and Professional Skills 1: Demystifying York (Analogue Communication), Second Year Architectural Design 3: Dwelling, Third Year Architectural Design 5: Architecture Clinic, and Studio and Professional Skills 3: Practice Management and Exhibition.
Prior to York, Farrelly was Professor of Architecture and Head of the School of Architecture at the University of Reading from 2016, where she established the new school. She previously coordinated degree courses in architecture and interior design at the University of Portsmouth. Farrelly holds a BA in Architecture. She chairs the Standing Conference of Heads of Schools of Architecture (SCOSA) since 2019, after serving on its council from 2014 to 2019, representing 56 UK schools. Additionally, she chairs the RIBA new courses group and participates in the RIBA validation team for national and international architecture schools. Her key publications include The Fundamentals of Architecture (2007), Basics Architecture 02: Construction & Materiality (2008), Basics Architecture 01: Representational Techniques (2008), and Materials and Interior Design (2012, co-authored with Rachael Brown). These works address foundational ideas in architecture, representational techniques, construction, materiality, and interior design.
