Professor Lisa Heitz-Mayfield serves as Professor of Periodontics in The University of Sydney Dental School, part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health. She earned her BDSc from the University of Adelaide, MDSc in Periodontology in 1996, and PhD in 1998 from Lund University, Sweden, with her doctoral research focused on periodontal and peri-implant regeneration. She also holds a Dr Odont degree. Early in her career, she was awarded a scholarship at the Brånemark Osseointegration Centre in Sweden and an ITI scholarship at the University of Bern, Switzerland. From 1999 to 2003, she headed the Oral Microbiology Research Laboratory. Her academic appointments include Adjunct Professor at the International Research Collaborative, Oral Health and Equity, University of Western Australia; Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Health Research, University of Notre Dame Australia; Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong; and specialist periodontal practice at Perth Periodontal Specialists.
Professor Heitz-Mayfield's research interests encompass periodontal diseases including plaque-induced gingivitis and periodontitis, peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, implant dentistry patient benefits and supportive care, implant disease risk assessment, bone augmentation and regeneration, and keratinized mucosa around dental implants. She has amassed over 14,000 citations across 88 publications. Notable works include 'Peri-implant mucositis' (2018), 'Peri-implant diseases and conditions: Consensus report of workgroup 4 of the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions' (2018), 'The Therapy of Peri-implantitis: A Systematic Review' (2014), 'Clinical outcomes of peri-implantitis treatment and supportive care: A systematic review' (2018), and 'Supportive peri-implant therapy following anti-infective surgical peri-implantitis treatment: 5-year survival and success' (2016). She co-authored the ITI Treatment Guide: Biological and Hardware Complications in Implant Dentistry and contributed the peri-implant infection chapter to the Jan Lindhe Textbook: Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. Her influence is evident in contributions to ITI Consensus Conferences, European Workshops on Periodontology, and development of core outcome sets for implant dentistry trials. Leadership roles include Chair of the ITI Research Committee and ITI Australasian Section, Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Oral Implants Research, past Education Delegate of the ITI Australasian Section, ITI Study Club Director Perth West, and President-elect of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontology. Awards and honors comprise the André Schroeder Research Prize in Implant Dentistry, ITI Honorary Fellow, Fellow of the International College of Dentistry, Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, and Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
