Dr. Leo Langa serves as Assistant Professor in Accounting at the University of Western Australia Business School. He earned a PhD in Finance and a Master of Economics (Research) from La Trobe University, along with a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from RMIT University, and is a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA). Before entering academia, Langa held industry positions in auditing, taxation, management accounting, legal enforcement, and financial market regulation. His academic appointments include Lecturer in Advanced Financial Accounting at La Trobe University in Melbourne, as well as roles as unit coordinator and lecturer at various Australian universities. At UWA, he coordinates units such as Financial Accounting (ACCT1101) and has contributed significantly to teaching innovation.
Langa's research focuses on Financial Accounting, Behavioural Finance, Stock Market Valuation Systems, Insider Trading, Online Investing, and Valuation Systems. Notable publications are 'Contract farming: global standards or market forces? The case of the Australian Dairy Industry' (with B. Zeller, Uniform Law Review, 2018) and 'Major Miners and Junior Miners - Investigating the Changing Competitive Structure of the Iron Ore Industry' (with G. Stockport, Academy of Taiwan Business Management Review, 2016). Current projects include analyses of online investor trading behaviour and segmentation (2019), demographic profiles of internet investors (2022), financial performance and disruption in British football clubs (2023), and liquidity, solvency, and financial distress in European and North American hotel companies (2024). He has secured funding through the UWA Education Futures Grant for Adaptive Learning in Accounting (2016, with Nikki Schonfeldt and Peter Robinson), Vision Reach Australia Industry Grant for football industry disruption (2015, with Gary Stockport), UWA Teaching Grant (2013), and La Trobe University Project Grant (2004). Langa received the 2013 UWA Business School Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Postgraduate Coursework category). His teaching methods featured in the 2009 ALTC report on best practices, distributed nationwide. He helped design the ASX Australian National Schools Stock Market Game, peer-reviewed the National Accounting Learning Standards project, and mentors CPA associates. Committee service includes UWA Business School Teaching & Learning Committee (2011-2018), Education Committee (2015-2017), and earlier ASX roles.
