Dr. Lena Kranold is a Lecturer in the School of Engineering at the University of Western Australia, joining in September 2023. She contributes to the delivery of the Biomedical Engineering program and conducts research in collaboration with the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. Kranold holds a B.Eng. degree in Technology Management and Marketing, majoring in electrical engineering and minoring in business administration, from the University of Applied Sciences Kiel, Germany (2013); an M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Information Engineering from Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany (2015); and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from McGill University, Canada (2020). Her PhD research centered on designing a wearable system for breast health monitoring, encompassing RF radar, antenna and array design, prototype development, and clinical trials. From 2021 to 2023, she served as a postdoctoral researcher in applied medical electromagnetics at ETH Zurich and the IT’IS Foundation, focusing on interactions between medical implants and electromagnetic fields, including customized projects for industry partners and regulatory submissions in MR implant safety.
Kranold's research specializes in applied and computational electromagnetics for biomedical applications, medical device development, and MR implant safety and compatibility. She utilizes multi-physics simulation software Sim4Life for studying electromagnetic interactions with anatomical models and tissues. Current UWA projects include Flexible Wearable Electronics for Health Monitoring, a benchtop MRI facility for sensor development, Every Heartbeat Matters—a pocket-sized radar for home heart monitoring—and Development of a Low-Cost Hand-Held Skin Cancer Classification Probe. Notable publications comprise 'Dosimetric Electromagnetic Safety of People With Implants: A Neglected Population?' (Bioelectromagnetics, 2025), 'Skin Phantoms for Microwave Breast Cancer Detection: A Comparative Study' (IEEE Journal of Electromagnetics, RF and Microwaves in Medicine and Biology, 2021), 'RF Radar Breast Health Monitoring: System Evaluation with Post Biopsy Marker' (same journal, 2020), and 'Microwave Breast Screening Prototype: System Miniaturization with IC Pulse Radio' (2020). She was awarded the Arthur Pilla Young Scientist Award at the BioEM 2023 Conference. Kranold serves on the BioEM Society Board (since 2024), as trainee representative in the ISMRM MR Safety Study Group (since 2024), and on the URSI Commission K Technical Advisory Committee (since 2023). Previously, she held roles on the IEEE Montreal Section Board, including Treasurer of the Women in Engineering Affinity Group (2017-2018) and Vice-Chair of the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Montreal Chapter (2019-2022).
