Professor Dooley has published extensively, engaging with industry through applied research projects, consultancy, and research master classes.

Dooley's influential works include the book 'Applying Innovation' (SAGE, 2008, co-authored with David O'Sullivan, 893 citations), 'The entrepreneurial university: Examining the underlying academic tensions' (Technovation, 2011, 978 citations with K. Philpott et al.), 'University-industry collaboration: Grafting the entrepreneurial paradigm onto academic structures' (European Journal of Innovation Management, 2007, 434 citations with D. Bogue), 'Idea management for organisational innovation' (International Journal of Innovation Management, 2003, 375 citations), and recent publications such as 'Open social innovation in response to grand challenges: promotor influence as change agent' (R&D Management, 2025, with G. Barrett) and 'Nurturing the sustainable and circular economy: an integrated ecosystems model' (Journal of Technology Transfer, 2025, with J.J. Ferreira et al.). With over 2,500 citations across platforms, his scholarship advances inter-enterprise collaboration, knowledge exchange, and ecosystem value creation. Since 2013, he has been Associate Editor for R&D Management and reviews for other innovation journals.
