Dr. Lara Dahl serves as Principal Lecturer of Oboe in the School of Music at Georgia State University, where she has been on faculty for over nineteen years, achieving the rank of Principal Senior Lecturer in 2019. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from Arizona State University, studying oboe with Martin Schuring, and her Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University under Geralyn Giovannetti. Before joining Georgia State, Dr. Dahl held the position of adjunct instructor of oboe at Utah State University and served as sabbatical replacement oboe professor at Brigham Young University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in fall 2003. In summer 2007, she studied with Joseph Robinson, former principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic. At Georgia State, she teaches Applied Oboe, Fundamentals of Music Theory, and Music, Society, and Culture survey courses. She has held key administrative roles including Woodwind Area Coordinator for the past several years, Director of Graduate Studies for the past few years, and was appointed the College of Arts' first Non-Tenure-Track Faculty Advocate in August 2022.
An active performer and educator, Dr. Dahl has appeared with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Opera Orchestra, Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, Columbus Symphony, Utah Symphony, Phoenix Symphony Orchestras, Arizona Opera Company, and Sunflower Music Festival Chamber Orchestra. She is a founding member of Atlanta Chamber Winds, which released the CD Music from Paris on the Albany label, and regularly freelances in the Atlanta area as an adjudicator, masterclass clinician, and sectional coach. Dr. Dahl has presented artist recitals at International Double Reed Society Conferences, served as guest chamber coach at Tianjin Conservatory in China in summer 2011, and organized masterclasses for her Georgia State oboe studio featuring artists such as Joseph Robinson, John Dee, Martin Schuring, and others. In 2024, she received Georgia State University's Exceptional Service Award.
