About Lance

Dr. Lance Newey is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business at the University of Queensland's UQ Business School. He earned a Bachelor with Honours from Queensland University of Technology and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland. Newey's research pioneers a wellbeing approach to business and society, integrating eight components of wellbeing—economic, environmental, social, cultural, physical, psychological, spiritual, and material. He utilizes polarity leveraging to enable leaders to create value across these components, promoting synergy between businesses and societies for maximized stakeholder wellbeing. His empirical work includes conceptual papers, a measurement paper on wellbeing, and field studies such as a large international investigation of leaders' wellbeing beliefs and practices in Alaska, India, and Norway, alongside in-depth applied research with the City of Anchorage, Alaska, to address decision-making gridlock across sectors.

Newey has developed an integrated wellbeing model with practical applications, including wellbeing frameworks for businesses and societies, and a wellbeing leadership development program funded through collaborations with Brisbane primary and secondary schools. His fields of research encompass commerce, management, tourism, and services. Key publications include 'Greatest good for the greatest number – the role of managers’ ethical meaning-making and subjective wellbeing complexity' (Journal of Business Ethics, 2024), '“I have to put my citizens hat on”: operational and societal mindsets to provide a new perspective on organisational decision making for sustainability' (Business Strategy and the Environment, 2024), 'Absorptive capacity, complexity and regional renewal: a developmental psychology perspective' (Regional Studies, 2024), 'Well-being as a staged social responsibility process: exploratory testing of a new theory' (Social Responsibility Journal, 2022), 'Lock-in, paradox and regional renewal' (Regional Studies, 2021), ''Changing the system': compensatory versus transformative social entrepreneurship' (Journal of Social Entrepreneurship, 2017), and 'On the frontiers: the implications of social entrepreneurship for international entrepreneurship' (Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, 2014).
