About Lancastre

Kirill de Lancastre Jedenov is Senior Lecturer and Architecture Undergraduate Coordinator in the Discipline of Architecture at the UWA Design School, University of Western Australia, where he has taught since 2014. His courses include Making and Integrated Design, Advanced Design Thinking and Integrated Design, Near Future Scenarios Master Studio, and Independent Research. He graduated under architect Manuel Aires Mateus, Professor at Harvard University, Mendrizio, Switzerland, and Oslo School of Architecture. Earlier, he worked at João Luís Carrilho da Graça's office, Head of Architecture at Universidade Autonoma and Universidade de Evora, and Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, France. During the European Financial Crisis, his studio was active, developing programs 'Lessons from the Crisis' and 'Tactics Developed in Times of Economic Crisis Applied in Design Studios' in Lisbon, Portugal, and Universität Innsbruck, Austria.

De Lancastre Jedenov's research focuses on independent thinking, near future scenarios, transdisciplinary projects via speculative publishing and drawing, computer simulations, rapid prototyping, data video visualisation, information design, ephemeral making, and data visualisation of social, environmental, political impacts. He promotes architecture as process, design-based research, systems between interconnected objects, design tactics, urban density in high- and low-density contexts, European contemporary architecture (Portugal, Switzerland), and evolutionary architecture including vernacular, Jørn Utzon’s Addictive Architecture, and Japanese Metabolists. From 2010-2014, he was Assistant Professor at Universidade Lusófona de Lisboa teaching Projecto de Arquitectura studios and Image and Content, and Visiting Professor at Universität Innsbruck. Key publications: House Ffat2 (2023), Diversity and Variation in China's Yao Ancient Wood Frame Structures Through Genetic Algorithms (2022), Education in the Expanded Field of Design: Biological Design (2022), Guangzhou Places: Density Series (2019), Always New Performance Based Design: Ise Shrines as a Model for Future Architecture (2017). He received the 2020 Teaching Excellence Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. His work appears in 20+ international books and magazines; he has organized 40+ seminars, given 22 keynotes/conferences, and featured in 15 exhibitions.
