Dr. Lakshmi Balasuriya, MBBS, MD (Medicine), FRACP, is a highly experienced physician with over 20 years in medical practice. She obtained her MBBS and MD in Medicine degrees from renowned universities in Sri Lanka. In 2017, she moved to Australia and completed her Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP), underscoring her dedication to advanced medical training and excellence in patient care. Currently, Dr. Balasuriya serves as a Consultant Physician in the Medical Assessment Units within the Department of General Medicine at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, where she specializes in General Medicine and Eating Disorders. She also holds a consultant position at Fiona Stanley Hospital and works as a physician in the North Metro Eating Disorder Specialist Service. Additionally, she practices at Carlisle Medical Centre, managing a broad spectrum of acute and chronic conditions.
In academia, Dr. Balasuriya is appointed as an Adjunct Clinical Senior Lecturer at Curtin Medical School, Curtin University, contributing to medical education and training. Her clinical interests include the management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and thyroid illnesses, alongside expertise in eating disorders and infectious diseases, including COVID-19. She has actively contributed to research in areas including infectious diseases, drug therapy for patients with diabetes, hypertension management, and the demographics of COVID-19 patients. These efforts have led to publications in reputable journals, such as the BMC Journal of Infectious Diseases. Fluent in English and Sinhalese, Dr. Balasuriya brings a multicultural perspective to her roles in clinical practice, research, and teaching within the medical field.
