Dr. K. S. Vijay Sekar serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at SSN College of Engineering, Chennai, a role he assumed in December 2021. He joined the institution in November 2007 following 11 years and 3 months of academic experience at Hindustan College of Engineering, Padur, where he earned the Best Achiever Award in 2005-06. His academic credentials include a B.E. in Production Engineering from 1996, an M.E. in CAD from 1999, and a Ph.D. from Anna University, Chennai, in 2011. At SSN, he teaches Finite Element Analysis, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Manufacturing Technology, and Design Concepts in Engineering. He has supervised three Ph.D. theses to completion and has one ongoing. Dr. Sekar has secured funding for three research projects: an AICTE project on experimental and finite element investigations of machining processes with composite materials (2013-2016, Rs. 18.65 lakhs), an IIE project on developing a low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle for crop damage inspection (2015-2016, Rs. 0.2 lakhs), and an SSN Trust project on design, development, and optimization of 3D FE models in drilling of titanium-based metal matrix composites (2019-2021, Rs. 2 lakhs).
Dr. Sekar's research specializes in Finite Element Analysis in Machining, Composites, and Process Optimization, with over 50 journal publications and 30 conference presentations. Key publications include 'Effect of machining parameters on cutting forces, chip microstructure and tool wear in Mg-ZrO2 reinforced MMC's' in Physica Scripta (2025), 'Machinability of Mg-Al2O3 Nanocomposites: Effects of Volume Percentage and Cutting Inserts' in Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance (2025), 'Assessment of Johnson-Cook material constitutive parameters in finite element simulation of machining Al–SiC metal matrix composite' in Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering (2023), and 'Machinability studies on the turning of metal matrix composites' in Archives of Metallurgy and Materials (2022). He has adapted six international textbooks to SI editions for Pearson Singapore, including Manufacturing Engineering and Technology by Serope Kalpakjian and Steven R. Schmid (2014, 2023) and Mechanics of Materials by R.C. Hibbeler (2013). His accolades encompass the Best Faculty of SSN award from Cognizant (2014-15), Best Faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department (2014-15, 2009-10, 2008-09), and Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Mechanical, Manufacturing and Control (ICMMC 2014, Singapore). A Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), life member of ISTE, and member of ASME, he has served as NIRF Coordinator for SSN, convener for ICEMM 2018 and ICEMMM 2021, and delivered invited lectures at Global Technology Business Centre, Ford Motors, Chennai, and Curtin University, Dubai.
