Kevin Ong is an adjunct and honorary staff member in the School of Information Technology at Murdoch University. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy at Murdoch University in 2020. His doctoral thesis, titled 'Evaluation and optimisation of Less-than-Best-Effort TCP congestion control mechanisms,' was undertaken in the Discipline of Information Technology, Mathematics, and Statistics. The research evaluated the performance of seven Less-than-Best-Effort (LBE) congestion control mechanisms across various scenarios using a Linux testbed that incorporated real-world network conditions. This work addressed challenges in low-priority data transfers designed not to interfere with standard best-effort traffic, such as background file sharing or web scraping.
Ong has co-authored several conference papers on TCP congestion control performance, primarily with Sebastian Zander, David Murray, and Tanya McGill from Murdoch University's School of Engineering and Information Technology. Key publications include 'Experimental Evaluation of Less-than-Best-Effort TCP Congestion Control Mechanisms' (42nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks, 2017), 'Experimental evaluation of less-than-best-effort TCP over 802.11 wireless networks' (LCN, 2017), 'Large-Sample Comparison of TCP Congestion Control Mechanisms over Wireless Networks' (30th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications Workshops, 2016), and 'Experimental Evaluation of Congestion Avoidance' (29th AINA Workshops, 2015). These studies utilized large-scale measurements and experimental setups to compare TCP variants in wireless environments. Ong's publications have received citations within the networking research community. The School of Information Technology belongs to Murdoch University's College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, where staff engage in IT research supported by dedicated laboratories.
