About Kevin

Kevin M. Kruse is a Professor of History at Princeton University, where he has been on the faculty since 2000, serving first as Assistant Professor from 2000 to 2006, Associate Professor from 2006 to 2012, and Professor since 2012. He received his Ph.D. in History from Cornell University in 2000, M.A. in History from Cornell in 1997, and B.A. in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994. Kruse studies the political, social, and urban/suburban history of 20th-century America, with emphasis on conflicts over race, rights, and religion.

His publications include the award-winning White Flight: Atlanta and the Making of Modern Conservatism (Princeton University Press, 2005), which earned the 2007 Francis B. Simkins Award from the Southern Historical Association, the Malcolm and Muriel Barrow Bell Award from the Georgia Historical Society, and the American Political Science Association's Best Book in Urban Politics; One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America (Basic Books, 2015); Fault Lines: A History of the United States Since 1974 (W. W. Norton, 2019, with Julian E. Zelizer); Myth America: Historians Take on the Biggest Legends and Lies About Our Past (Basic Books, 2022, edited with Julian E. Zelizer); and The New Suburban History (University of Chicago Press, 2006, co-edited). Kruse has published articles in leading journals including the Journal of Southern History and Journal of Urban History. Among his honors are a Guggenheim Fellowship, election to the Society of American Historians in 2020, Distinguished Lecturer status with the Organization of American Historians (2013-2016), the Princeton Behrman Fellowship in the Humanities (2006-2008), and the David L. Rike University Preceptorship (2003-2006). He has directed numerous doctoral dissertations, served on editorial boards and program committees for major historical organizations, and taught courses such as American Political History and the Civil Rights Movement.
