About Kenan

Dr. Kenan Kalaycı is a Senior Lecturer in Economics in the School of Economics at the University of Queensland. He earned his PhD in Economics from Tilburg University in 2011, an MSc in Economics from the same institution in 2007, and a BA in Economics from Sabancı University in 2005. His research specializes in behavioural economics and industrial organization, with a focus on behavioural industrial organization. Kalaycı pioneers empirical studies in this area, developing experimental methodologies to examine spurious product differentiation, price discrimination, market complexity, consumer confusion, and competition. His work integrates insights from psychology into economic analysis of markets. Key research interests include applied economics, econometrics, economic theory, experimental and behavioural methods, and industry economics.

Since joining the University of Queensland in 2011, Kalaycı has held several appointments, including Lab Manager of the UQ Experimental Economics Laboratory since 2017, member of the BEL Faculty Ethics Committee since 2017, Acting Chair of the School Ethics Committee in 2016, and coordinator of Applied Economics Seminars from 2011 to 2013 and in 2016. He served as an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Fellow from 2016 to 2019, receiving $358,000 in funding, and was a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford from 2017 to 2018. Notable awards include the Excellence in Teaching Award from the UQ School of Economics in 2014, Distinguished Teaching Certificates in 2012 and 2015, and the Best Paper Award at the Economic Science Association Asia-Pacific Meeting in 2010. His influential publications, cited over 390 times, appear in top journals and include "Buyer Confusion and Market Prices" (International Journal of Industrial Organization, 2011, with Jan Potters), "Price Complexity and Buyer Confusion in Markets" (Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 2015), "Confusopoly: Competition and Obfuscation in Markets" (Experimental Economics, 2016), "Complexity and Biases" (Experimental Economics, 2016, with Marta Serra-Garcia), "Do Regulations Work? A Comprehensive Analysis of Price Limits and Trading Restrictions in Experimental Asset Markets" (Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 2020, with Zhengyang Bao, Andreas Leibbrandt, and Carlos Oyarzun), and "Pyramid Schemes" (Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 2026, with Gönül Doğan and Priscilla Man). Kalaycı has collaborated with the Australian Taxation Office on policy development and was invited as an expert panellist by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
