About Kelvin

Professor Kelvin S. Y. Leung serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at Hong Kong Baptist University. He earned his B.Sc. (Hons.) and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Hong Kong. Before assuming the headship on September 1, 2022, he was appointed full professor in 2020 and directed the Master of Science programme in Analytical Chemistry for eight years. Additionally, he holds a visiting professorship at Jinan University. His research centers on atomic spectrometry and environmental analytical chemistry. Within atomic spectrometry, he examines interactions between exogenous and endogenous elements in biological systems via total elemental analysis, speciation, and bioimaging techniques. In environmental analytical chemistry, he develops methods for detecting emerging contaminants in complex matrices, investigates their environmental fate, and evaluates impacts on human health. He has secured funding for over thirty projects from sources including the General Research Fund, Innovation and Technology Fund, and Shenzhen Science, Technology and Innovation Commission Fund.

Professor Leung has authored more than 100 publications in leading journals such as Environmental Science & Technology, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Water Research, Environment International, Analytical Chemistry, Journal of Chromatography A, Analytica Chimica Acta, and Science of the Total Environment. Key works include 'Emerging contaminants: a one health perspective' (The Innovation, 2024), 'Risks of organic UV filters: a review of environmental and human health concern studies' (Science of the Total Environment, 2021), 'Formation of PCB-like and PCDF-like transformation products from liquid crystal monomers in aqueous chlorination: Degradation, transformation and toxicity evaluation' (Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2025), and 'Time-Varying Relationship between Maternal Trace Element Exposure and Gestational Hypothyroidism' (Environmental Science & Technology Letters, 2025). He contributes to the field as Associate Editor of Environmental Technology & Innovation, Youth Editor of The Innovation, and editorial board member of Science of the Total Environment, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, Toxics, Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine, Journal of Integrated OMICS, with an advisory role for Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry.
