Katie Thomas is the Clinical Assistant Professor and Chair of the Dunigan Family School of Nursing at the University of Evansville. A 2000 graduate of the university with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana. Thomas is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Educational Leadership. She holds certifications as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Women's Health and a Board Certified Perinatal Nurse from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Throughout her nursing career, she has primarily worked in obstetrics, including over ten years as an advanced practice nurse in high-risk obstetrics at Tri-State Perinatology. Thomas began her academic career in 2006 as an adjunct professor for the University of Evansville, teaching pediatrics and obstetrics in hospital settings. In 2018, she returned to her alma mater as a full-time assistant professor of nursing and has since advanced to her current leadership role.
In her position as Chair, Thomas teaches primarily at the sophomore level in the nursing program. She was honored with the Nancy McFadin Mueller Endowed Chair in Nursing during an investiture ceremony on April 11, 2025, recognizing her dedication to nursing education and clinical excellence. Under her leadership, the University of Evansville nursing program achieved a 100% first-time NCLEX pass rate, highlighting the effectiveness of its curriculum and faculty support in preparing students for professional practice. Thomas also contributes to university governance as a member of the Faculty Senate Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, representing Undergraduate Nursing, Education, and Health Sciences through 2027. Her clinical background as a Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist informs her teaching, emphasizing practical skills and active learning, such as student partnerships with the American Red Cross to deliver lifesaving skills training. Thomas resides in Newburgh, Indiana, with her husband and three children.
