Kathryn Anthony serves as Emerita Professor and ACSA Distinguished Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a position she has held as the longest-serving female faculty member since 1984. She earned her Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981 and her B.A. in Psychology from the same university in 1976. Throughout her career, Anthony has focused her research and teaching on social and behavioral factors in design, gender and race in contemporary architecture, entrepreneurship in design, and the interplay of architecture, cinema, environment, and behavior. She developed and taught innovative courses including ARCH 423: Social and Behavioral Factors for Design; ARCH/GWS 424: Gender and Race in Contemporary Architecture; ARCH 563: Research Methods in Designed Environments; ARCH 576 ACB/ARCH 596 AC: Architecture, Cinema, Environment and Behavior; and ARCH 576: Entrepreneurship in Design, Diversity, Environment, and Behavior. Anthony has delivered lectures across the United States and internationally at prestigious institutions such as Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Notre Dame, Princeton, and Tuskegee universities.
Anthony's scholarly contributions have significantly shaped the discourse in Architecture and Design, emphasizing diversity, equity, and the human impact of built environments. Her award-winning books include Design Juries on Trial: The Renaissance of the Design Studio (1991), Designing for Diversity: Gender, Race, and Ethnicity in the Architectural Profession (2001), Shedding New Light on Art Museum Additions: Front Stage and Back Stage Experiences co-authored with Altaf Engineer (2017), and Defined by Design: The Surprising Power of Hidden Gender, Age, and Body Bias in Everyday Products and Places (2017). Among her honors are the 2021 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion—the highest award for excellence in architectural education—the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award from Chicago Women in Architecture recognizing her 40-year career, and the 2018-19 Faculty Award for Excellence in Research from UIUC's College of Fine + Applied Arts. Her extensive publications, exceeding 100, have been featured in media outlets including CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, CNN, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, and The Guardian, amplifying her influence on both academia and public understanding of inclusive design practices.
