About Kate

Kate Reynolds is the Professor of Educational Psychology and Learning in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne, a position she assumed in August 2022 upon moving from the Australian National University, where she served as Professor in the Research School of Psychology. She holds a PhD in social psychology from the Australian National University. In addition to her professorial role, Reynolds is Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Education, co-leads the Learning Intervention Academic Group, and contributes to the Digital Wellbeing and Communities Research Hub. She has oversight of projects funded by the National Intelligence Postdoctoral Grant Scheme Round 4 2024, including those addressing misogyny, radicalisation, and related issues, and has secured ARC Discovery Project funding.

Reynolds' research develops effective models of behaviour change grounded in the social identity perspective, focusing on how group membership, norms, and identification shape individuals' attitudes, well-being, and actions. Her work in education examines school climate, student-school identification, and their effects on motivation, engagement, academic achievement, mental health, and well-being. Applications extend to social cohesion, health, and energy consumption. Key publications include 'Social identity, prejudice and social change: Beyond the Allportian problematic' (Reynolds, Haslam, & Turner, 2012), 'School climate, school identification and student outcomes: A longitudinal multilevel study' (2023), and 'Youth well-being predicts later academic success' (Cárdenas et al., 2022). She has served on the University of Melbourne Academic Board since 2022, enhancing research leadership and impact in psychology and education.
