Associate Professor Karina Murray serves as an education-focused academic in the Sydney Law School at the University of Sydney, holding the title of Associate Professor in Early Stage Units and/or Legal Education Specialist. She is recognized as a University of Sydney Horizon Fellow. Murray joined the University of Sydney Law School in 2025, following her tenure as an Associate Professor in the School of Law at the University of Wollongong. Her academic credentials include a PhD from the University of Wollongong, focused on the ethical professional identities of lawyer directors in incorporated legal practices, along with a BA and an LLB (Hons) from the same institution. Prior to her academic career, she held positions in the public sector involving people and project management and managed a multi-office regional law firm.
Murray's research interests center on legal ethics, legal education, and the legal profession. She teaches Legal Ethics and Corporations Law and coordinates the Sydney Law School Internships subject. Key publications include co-authorship of the textbook Lawyers in Australia, with the fifth edition published in 2025 by Federation Press alongside John Littrich, succeeding the fourth edition in 2019. Additional works encompass a chapter titled 'Dual or duelling identities: developing an ethical professional identity as lawyer and director' in the Research Handbook on the Sociology of Legal Ethics (2025), 'The role of a law student pledge in shaping positive professional and ethical identities: a case study from Australia' in the International Journal of the Legal Profession (2020), 'Reflections on belonging and a law student pledge' in the Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice (2022), and 'Taking hints from Hogwarts: UOW's first year law immersion program' in the Journal of the Australasian Law Academics Association (2013). For her contributions to teaching, she received a Citation for the Australian Award for University Teaching in 2015. Murray is a founding member of the Wollongong chapter of the Women Lawyers Association NSW and delivers continuing professional development training on legal ethics and professional responsibility.
