About Kais

Associate Professor Kais Kasem serves as Associate Professor in clinical pathology in the Department of Clinical Pathology at the University of Melbourne. He leads the pathology discipline teaching for the Doctor of Medicine program. A consultant surgical pathologist, he trained in Queensland hospitals and obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) in 2016. His academic qualifications include MBChB, Postgraduate Diploma in General Pathology, PhD in molecular pathology of cancer, and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. Since March 2019, he has been affiliated with the University of Melbourne.

Kais Kasem's PhD research elucidated the role of FAM134B as a new tumour suppressor gene in colorectal cancer through studies on promoter hypermethylation and microRNA regulation. Key publications include 'Promoter hypermethylation inactivates tumor suppressor FAM134B and is associated with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer' (2018), 'Inhibition of miR-186-5p suppresses colon cancer growth: an anti-miRNA mediated upregulation of tumour suppressor FAM134B' (2017), 'MicroRNA-186-5p overexpression modulates colon cancer growth by repressing the expression of the FAM134B tumour inhibitor' (2017), 'Colorectal cancer with osseous metaplasia – An institutional experience' (2018), and 'Immunohistochemistry for Protein Detection in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma' (2020). He has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers in surgical pathology, molecular pathology, and medical education, with over 340 citations. His clinical specializations encompass anatomical pathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, cytology, and endocrine pathology. Kais Kasem convenes the Digital Pathology meetings for the International Academy of Pathology in Australia and serves on multiple boards at the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He delivers seminars such as 'Understanding the Mysteries of Colorectal Cancer Pathology' and contributes to pathology education through advanced teaching strategies.
