In June 2025, the Metropolitan State University of Denver Board of Trustees approved promotions for 20 faculty members to the rank of professor, including Justin Young, Ph.D., in the English department. He departed as affiliate faculty in August 2025 after serving as Associate Professor of English and Director of First Year Writing. Young was recognized at the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Design Celebration of Faculty alongside other distinguished educators from the English department and across campus. As Writing Program Administrator, he oversaw affiliate instructor hiring for first-year writing and composition courses.
Justin Young's academic career includes significant leadership in writing programs. Prior to MSU Denver, he served as Associate Professor of English at Eastern Washington University, directing the English Composition Program and the Writers' Center. In 2022, he was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to Belgium, where he conducted research related to composition pedagogy during his stay in Antwerp. Young contributed to scholarly discourse in composition and soundwriting. He authored Chapter 11, 'Audio Engineering and Soundwriting in an Undergraduate Soundwriting Course,' in the book Amplifying Soundwriting Pedagogies published by the WAC Clearinghouse. He also reviewed the open textbook Writing Guide with Handbook, noting its effective coverage of writing genres for first-year composition students. Young presented at professional conferences, including the Association for Business Communication annual international conferences in 2023 and 2024 on topics such as teaching business narratives in first-year writing courses, and earlier at Conference on College Composition and Communication events.
