Jun Huang serves as an Assistant Professor in the McComish Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at South Dakota State University, where he directs the Wireless Networking and Mobile Computing Laboratory. His research centers on machine learning in mobile networks, space-air-ground integrated networks for 6G systems, and cyber-physical systems, with additional interests in networking for trustworthy AI and distributed learning in mobile systems. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science with honors from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in China in 2012, along with a joint Ph.D. in Telecommunications from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. Throughout his career, Dr. Huang has held positions including non-tenure track faculty at Baylor University from 2021 to 2023, full professor appointments at Northwestern Polytechnical University from 2020 to 2021 and Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications from 2012 to 2016 and 2017 to 2020. He has also served as a Visiting Scholar at the University of British Columbia, Research Fellow at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and the University of Texas at Dallas, and Guest Professor at the National Institute of Standards and Technology from 2016 to 2017.
Dr. Huang's scholarly contributions include numerous publications in prestigious venues. Notable works encompass “Combining Federated Learning and Edge Computing toward Ubiquitous Intelligence in 6G Network: Challenges, Recent Advances, and Future Directions” in IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials (2023), “A Fine-Grained Video Traffic Control Mechanism in Software-Defined Networks” in IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management (2022), and “Power Allocation for D2D Communications with SWIPT” in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications (2020). His research has earned accolades such as the Best Paper Award at EAI Mobimedia 2019 for “Harnessing D2D Communications in Collaborative Mobile Clouds for Content Sharing: An Energy-Efficient Communication Scheme” and the Best Paper Award at IEEE IPCCC 2025. Additionally, he received Outstanding Service Awards from ACM RACS in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and the Outstanding Research Award (Tier I) from Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 2019. As a Senior Member of the IEEE, Dr. Huang contributes to the Graduate Program Committee and Faculty Search Committee at South Dakota State University, advancing the field through his lab's work on wireless federated learning, vehicular networks, and intelligent IoT control.
