About Judy

Judy Tzu-Chun Wu is Professor in the Departments of History and Asian American Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She serves as Associate Dean in the School of Humanities for Research, Faculty Development, and Public Engagement, and as Director of the Humanities Center. Wu received her Ph.D. in History from Stanford University in 1998. Her research specializations include Asian American history, comparative racialization and immigration, empire and decolonization, and gender and sexuality. She investigates how individuals form identities and navigate or protest intersecting social hierarchies based on race, gender, sexuality, and citizenship. Previous appointments include Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Chicago's Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture from 2005 to 2006.

Wu is the author of Dr. Mom Chung of the Fair-Haired Bastards: The Life of a Wartime Celebrity (University of California Press, 2005), Radicals on the Road: Internationalism, Orientalism, and Feminism during the Vietnam Era (Cornell University Press, 2013), and Fierce and Fearless: Patsy Takemoto Mink, First Woman of Color in Congress (New York University Press, 2022), the latter co-authored with Gwendolyn Mink. She co-edited Gendering the Trans-Pacific World (Brill, 2017) and Women's America: Refocusing the Past, 8th Edition (Oxford University Press, 2015). Her current projects examine Asian American and Pacific Islander women at the 1977 National Women’s Conference and co-editing Unequal Sisters, 5th edition (Routledge). Wu has received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentorship (2020-2021), Dynamic Womxn of UCI Tamara Austin Legacy Award (2021), Cross-Cultural Center Faculty Ally of the Year (2021), and Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research (2019). She co-edited Frontiers: A Journal of Women’s Studies (2012-2017), edited Amerasia Journal (2019-2022), served as Series Co-Editor for Cornell University Press’s U.S. in the World (2020), and is Co-President of the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians (2023). She chaired the University of California Press Editorial Committee (2021-2022).
