Mrs Jordana Maio is a Senior Lecturer in Speech Pathology within the School of Allied Health Science and Practice in the College of Health at Adelaide University. As Program Director of the Unique Speech Pathology program, she oversees its development and delivery. A Certified Practising Speech Pathologist accredited by Speech Pathology Australia, Maio has substantial clinical experience gained over many years in the acute neuroscience sector. Her clinical work focused on supporting individuals and families dealing with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and progressive neurodegenerative disorders. In academia, she specializes in practice education, with a strong emphasis on interprofessional learning placements. She has pioneered innovative placement models in partnership with industry, co-designing structures, assessment tools, and supervisory frameworks to ensure consistent, fair evaluation of students while upholding clinical and educational standards. Her efforts aim to equip students for contemporary healthcare challenges.
Maio is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy at Torrens University Australia, researching the healthcare pathways and lived experiences of parents managing children with autoimmune diseases, with a focus on complementary and alternative medicine. Her scholarly contributions include the scoping review "Parental management of autoimmune disease with complementary and alternative medicine: a scoping review of the literature in OECD countries" published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies (2025, co-authored with P.R. Ward and C.A. Smith), and "Definitional and methodological inconsistencies in complementary and alternative medicine research for paediatric autoimmune disease: A targeted review" in Advances in Integrative Medicine (2026). She has also published on interprofessional education, such as "Reimagining Interprofessional Placements: An Innovative Student-Run Allied Health Service in School Settings" (2025), and co-authored "Developing a Critical Imagination for How Researchers can use Artificially Intelligent Tools Reflexively and Responsibly During Qualitative Literature Reviews" (International Journal of Qualitative Methods, 2025). Prior to her current role, she served as Lecturer and Clinical Education Coordinator at the University of South Australia (2017-2022) and Flinders University. She earned her Bachelor of Speech Pathology from Flinders University (2005-2009).
