John von Neumann was a Hungarian-American mathematician who served as Professor of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1933 until his death in 1957. He was one of the original six professors appointed to the Institute and its youngest at the time of his appointment. Born János Lajos Margittai Neumann on December 28, 1903, in Budapest, Hungary, he earned a diploma in chemical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1925 and a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Budapest in 1926, with a thesis on the axiomatization of set theory. Prior to joining the Institute, he held positions as a privatdozent at the University of Berlin from 1927 to 1930 and as a visiting professor at Princeton University starting in 1930.
Von Neumann made foundational contributions across multiple fields, including the mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, the development of game theory in collaboration with Oskar Morgenstern, the theory of operator algebras, ergodic theory, and the architecture of digital computers, known as the von Neumann architecture. He directed the Electronic Computer Project at the Institute from 1945 to 1955, which produced one of the earliest stored-program computers. His key publications include Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics (1932) and Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (1944). During World War II, he contributed to the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Von Neumann received numerous honors, including the Bôcher Memorial Prize in 1938, the Presidential Medal for Merit in 1946, the Medal of Freedom in 1956, and the Enrico Fermi Award in 1956. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and held memberships in several other academies. He died on February 8, 1957, at the age of 53.
