Joeri Vananroye is a professor in the Faculty of Law and Criminology at KU Leuven and head of the Institute for Insolvency Law. He earned a Baccalaureus in Law and Licentiate in Law (magna cum laude) from KU Leuven in 1993 and 1996, respectively, a certificate in philosophy (cum laude) from KU Leuven in 1997, an LL.M. from the University of Chicago in 1997, and a Doctor iuris (Dr. iur.) from KU Leuven in 2011. His doctoral research focused on undivided estates and legal persons as techniques for asset separation and transfer, defended under the supervision of Prof. Koenraad Geens, Prof. Eric Dirix, and others. Vananroye founded the Corporate Finance Lab in 2016, a research platform on legal aspects of corporate finance. He coordinates the business strategy option in the joint Master of Economics, Business and Law and served as visiting professor at Leiden Law School in 2017-18 under the TPR Chair. As an attorney at Quinz in Brussels, he specializes in commercial arbitration and litigation, corporate finance, and insolvency law. He advised the Belgian Minister of Justice on the 2018 overhaul of Belgian commercial law, abolishing the Code de Commerce of 1807, and delivered keynote speeches at the formal openings of the judicial year in Brussels in 2012 and Leuven in 2016.
Vananroye's academic interests center on insolvency law, commercial law, corporate law, economic analysis of law, entity shielding, limited liability, creditor protection, and reorganization law. He leads multiple research projects as promotor, including 'The Directors’ Personal Liability for Environmental Claims in Insolvency' (2025-2029), 'Successor liability and non-adjusting creditor protection in Belgian reorganization law' (2025-2029), 'Shareholder subordination and judicial reorganization' (2024-2028), and 'The technology of non-adjusting creditor protection against internal asset shielding techniques under Belgian, French, and Italian law' (2024-2028). He has supervised PhD theses on topics such as abuse of exclusion and withdrawal remedies in private companies, publicity and third-party protection in transferable assets, and distribution prohibitions in non-profits. Selected publications include 'Oncomfortabele reflecties over de ‘letter of comfort’' (TRV/RPS, 2026), 'Boek 6 BW als de passerelle tussen het rechtspersonenrecht en andere rechtstakken – toerekening aan rechtspersonen en hun uitvoeringsagenten' with S. De Dier (Roularta, 2025), 'Rechtspersoonlijkheid: een relatief vennootschapsrechtelijk begrip met absolute fiscale implicaties' with S. Cools (Wolters Kluwer, 2024), and editorship of 'Privaatrecht Plenis Coloribus - Liber Amicorum Matthias Storme' (2024). At KU Leuven, he teaches courses including Insolventierecht, Ondernemingsrecht, Economic Analysis of Law, and Insolventie: juridische en economische aspecten.
