João Pereira is Professor Catedrático at the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (ENSP), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. He obtained his PhD in Economics and Master's in Health Economics from the University of York (UK), Agregação in Public Health and Health Economics from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, and Licenciatura in Economics and Politics from the University of Warwick (UK). His academic interests center on the measurement of health equity, economic evaluation of health interventions and technologies, financing of health systems, and broader public health issues. As a researcher, he is affiliated with the Centro de Investigação em Saúde Pública (CISP) and the Comprehensive Health Research Centre (CHRC) at NOVA.
Professor Pereira has a distinguished career marked by leadership roles including former Director of ENSP NOVA, President of the Associação Portuguesa de Economia da Saúde (APES), Editor-in-Chief of the Portuguese Journal of Public Health, and President of the Conselho Geral of the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Lisboa. He has advised international bodies such as the World Health Organization, the European Commission, DFID-UK, and the World Bank, and contributed to numerous Portuguese government committees on health policy. He has authored or coordinated eight books and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. Key publications include "Equidade no acesso aos cuidados de saúde em Portugal: o que sabemos?" (Acta Médica Portuguesa, 2025), "The impact of socioeconomic inequities and small-area deprivation on pediatric inpatient care in Lisbon suburban area" (European Journal of Public Health, 2025), "Patient preferences and cost-benefit of hypertension and hyperlipidemia collaborative management model between pharmacies and primary care in Portugal: A discrete choice experiment alongside a trial (USFarmácia®)" (PLoS ONE, 2023), and "Real-world effectiveness in hypertension and hyperlipidemia collaborative management between pharmacies and primary care in Portugal: a multicenter pragmatic controlled trial (USFarmácia®)" (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2023). His work has had significant impact on health economics and policy in Portugal and beyond.
