Joanne Sneddon is an Associate Professor of Marketing in the UWA Business School and Co-Director of the UWA Centre for Human and Cultural Values at the University of Western Australia. She earned her PhD in Management and Marketing from the UWA Business School in 2009, with a thesis titled 'Innovation in the Australian wool industry: a sensemaking perspective.' She also holds a Master of Commerce and an MBA, having studied management at Durham University and Curtin University. Her career trajectory includes serving as Research Assistant and Adjunct Lecturer at UWA's Centre for Entrepreneurial Management and Innovation from 2003 to 2005, Small Business Training Program Manager at Curtin University's Entrepreneurship and Business Development Unit from 2000 to 2003, and Adjunct Lecturer in Management at Curtin University Business School in 2001. Before entering academia, she managed M&K Marketing Services, a textile point-of-sale manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Sneddon has contributed to research projects and consultancies for organizations such as the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Department of Agriculture and Food, Australian Wool Innovation, and Meat and Livestock Australia, focusing on innovation and research management.
Her research specializations encompass human values, the measurement of values in adults and children, and the influence of values on consumer and pro-social behaviors, including giving, volunteering, and transformative consumer behavior. She developed the Best-Worst refined values instrument (BWVr) for adults, the Animated Values Instrument (AVI and AVIr) for children, and introduced an Animal Welfare value defined as empathic concern for the welfare of all animals. Sneddon has authored over 40 publications in international journals such as Assessment, Personality and Individual Differences, Annals of Tourism Research, Psychology & Marketing, Child Development, and European Journal of Personality. Notable works include 'Visitors' values and environmental learning outcomes at wildlife attractions: Implications for interpretive practice' (2018), 'Testing and extending Schwartz refined value theory using a best–worst scaling approach' (2019), 'Are value–behavior relations stronger than previously thought? It depends on value importance' (2022), and recent articles like 'A Fundamental Difference in the Nature of Personal Values and Personality Traits Revealed Through Different Patterns of Stability Across Their Distributions' (2025). She received the Charles R. Goeldner Article of Excellence Award (2021, with Ye, S., Lee, J., Soutar, G.), UWA Business School Teaching Award (2011), Ahern Family Research Portfolio Prize (2009), and Best Paper in the Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics track (2009). Sneddon serves on the UWA Business School Research Committee since 2022 and was a reviewer on the editorial board for the Personality and Social Psychology section of Frontiers in Psychology from 2018 to 2021.
