Dr Joanne Castelli is a Senior Lecturer and Teaching Academic in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin University, holding post-nominals PhD and SFHEA. She serves in the Office of the Provost, focusing on advancing educational practices within STEM disciplines. Her contributions emphasize inclusive teaching strategies, cultural competence in assessment, career development for students, and equity-centred design thinking applied to curriculum development. As an Educational Designer, she has engaged students in hands-on science activities, such as exploring the science of cheese making to illustrate microbiological and biochemical principles.
Dr Castelli has co-authored several publications and presentations on innovative pedagogy. Notable works include 'Assessment that Nurtures Cultural Competence' (2024, presented at IISME), 'STEM Futures: Empowering Students Through Career Development' (2025, IISME), 'Equity by Design: Applying Equity-Centred Design Thinking to Curriculum Development' (2025, with colleagues from Curtin University), and contributions to 'Embedding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Australian STEM Higher Education Curricula' (2022). She co-presented 'Designing for All Minds: Inclusive Teaching Strategies' at the 2025 ASI Education SIG Workshop in Perth, alongside Dr Bri McKenzie and Dr Bahareh Afsharnejad. Additionally, she participated in the webinar 'Overcoming Barriers: Teaching for Diversity and Equity in STEM' (2021, ACDS). Previously associated with the University of Western Australia School of Animal Biology, her career trajectory reflects a commitment to enhancing teaching and learning environments. She has been involved in international educational experiences, including leading Science and Engineering students on a trip to Seoul, South Korea, in December 2024. Dr Castelli is recognized as a Course Lead in Engineering programs at Curtin University for 2025. Her SFHEA fellowship underscores her expertise in higher education pedagogy.
