About Jia

Jia Miao is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at NYU Shanghai, New York University, a position she has held since September 2020. She earned a Ph.D. in Social Science (Sociology) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2017, an M.A. in Social Science (Sociology) from the same institution in 2014, an M.A. in Sociology from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences in 2019, and a B.A. in Law from Fudan University in 2006. Her career includes roles as Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Social Science at HKUST from June 2018 to August 2020, Research Associate at HKUST's Institute for Public Policy from September 2017 to June 2018, and Staff Research Associate at the Institute of Sociology, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences from September 2009 to July 2012. She currently serves as Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Social Development, East China Normal University since September 2021.

Miao's research focuses on urban sociology, social demography, population aging, health inequality, child development, and survey and quantitative methods. Her key publications include "Does homeownership improve health outcomes? Evidence from Hong Kong" with Tyler Haupert (Cities, 2024); "Early childhood development and social mobility in China" with Xiaogang Wu and Xin Li (ECNU Review of Education, 2024); "Social consequences of homeownership: Evidence from the Home Ownership Scheme in Hong Kong" with Xiaogang Wu (Social Forces, 2023); "Promoting ageing in place in Hong Kong: Neighbourhood social environment and depression among older adults" with Xiaogang Wu and Donglin Zeng (Journal of Asian Public Policy, 2022); and "Can neighborhoods protect residents from mental distress during the COVID-19 pandemic? Evidence from Wuhan" with Donglin Zeng and Zhilei Shi (Chinese Sociological Review, 2021). She has co-edited Understanding Inequality in China: The Contribution of the Chinese General Social Survey (2024) and Bluebook of Chinese Parenting and Child Development (2024). Miao has received the Shanghai Leading Talents Program Young Scholar scheme (2021-present) and Shanghai Eastern Scholar Program Young Scholar Scheme (2021-2024). She is on the editorial board of Journal of Cities and Society (2023-present), a founding faculty member and Executive Committee member of the Center for Applied Social and Economic Research (CASER) at NYU Shanghai (2020-present), and has served on various academic committees, including search committees and as a judge for the Undergraduate Research Symposium.
