Professor Jeremy Chapman AC, FAHMS, is a Clinical Professor at the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney. He holds the position of Clinical Director of the Division of Medicine and Cancer at Westmead Hospital, where he also practices as a senior transplant surgeon and nephrologist. Director of Western Renal Services, he chairs the Westmead Research Committee and serves on the board of the Western Sydney Local Health District. Chapman's expertise lies in transplantation medicine; he has played a pivotal role in establishing and advancing kidney, pancreas, and unrelated bone marrow transplantation in Australia. On the global stage, he has led the development of ethical transplantation practices through involvement with The Transplantation Society, the World Marrow Donor Association, and advisory capacities with the World Health Organization.
Professor Chapman's distinguished career includes managing the Australian National Kidney Matching Service since 1988 and chairing the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry since 1991. His profound impact on the field is evidenced by prestigious honors: Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 2015 for contributions to medicine, research, organ donation ethics, and renal organizations; Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2003; Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (FAHMS) in 2017; and the 2022 Medawar Prize from The Transplantation Society. Recognized as the world's top kidney transplant expert by Expertscape in 2014, his extensive publications, such as "The global diffusion of organ transplantation: trends, drivers and regulation" (2014), "Progress in Transplantation: Will It Be Achieved in Big Steps or by Many Small Steps?" (2017), and "Controversies in Living Kidney Donation" (2023), have shaped international policies and clinical practices in organ transplantation.
