Dr Jennifer S. Hunt is a Senior Lecturer in Cyber and Security Studies in the Department of Security Studies and Criminology, Faculty of Arts, at Macquarie University. She holds a PhD in International Security from the University of Sydney, where her thesis examined the economic-energy security nexus from the perspective of Gulf Cooperation Council states, along with a Master’s Degree in International Security from the same institution and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where she captained the Women’s Sabre Fencing team. Prior to her appointment at Macquarie, Hunt was a Lecturer in National Security at the Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy, a researcher and lecturer at the University of Sydney’s Centre for International Security Studies, and a faculty member at the US Studies Centre, University of Sydney. She has also been associated with Sydney Business School and the College of Commerce & Economics at Sultan Qaboos University.
Hunt’s research focuses on national security of critical systems, including cybersecurity, energy security, cyber-enabled information operations, foreign interference, electoral security, disinformation tracking, US politics, and research methods. Her key publications include “Trust Data Not Lore: Disinformation in the Time of COVID-19” (2020), “Pandemic V. Post Truth: Misinformation in the age of COVID-19” (2020), “National Security Trendlines 2019” (2019), “Qatar Gulf Cleavage a Long Time in the Making” (2017), and co-authored “Workplace Research: Conducting Small-Scale Research in Organizations” with Zina O’Leary (2016). She has provided expert commentary for ABC’s Q&A, The Project, BBC, and the History Channel, and participated as a delegate at the Shangri-La Dialogue and the World Economic Forum in Abu Dhabi. Hunt convenes units such as Cyber Conflict, Cyber Espionage and Information Warfare, and Critical Thought and Research Design, supervises PhD students on topics including youth radicalisation and ransomware, and has been student-nominated for teaching awards across security studies, business, and politics departments. She was successful in Macquarie University’s 2022 academic promotions round.
