Jennifer Carioto is a Professor in Communications at Algonquin College. She serves as the Coordinator of the Occupation-Specific Language Training (OSLT) program offered through the Algonquin College Language Institute. This free program targets newcomers to Canada with education or experience in Business or Health Sciences occupations, helping them improve their English language skills for the workplace. Participants must reside in Ontario, hold permanent resident status or protected person designation, and demonstrate English proficiency at CLB levels 6, 7, or 8 as assessed by the Language Assessment Referral Centre at the YMCA on 240 Catherine Street in Ottawa. The part-time courses, totaling approximately 180 hours, are delivered during evenings and weekends at college campuses or workplaces, incorporating authentic tasks to build skills in understanding workplace culture, interacting with colleagues and clients, communicating via email and telephone, and conducting interviews and networking.
Specific occupations addressed by OSLT include Accounting/Finance, Personnel/HR, Entrepreneur/Sales & Marketing, Hospitality Worker, and Project Manager in the Business sector; and Dental Hygienist, Medical Laboratory Technologist, Medical Radiation Technologist, Nurse, Personal Support Worker, and Sleep Technologist in Health Sciences. Offerings vary by semester. Jennifer Carioto can be contacted in Room B453 at 613-727-4723 ext. 5700. She completed the 2020-2021 cohort of the Algonquin Leadership in Education Institute (ALEI) program, a professional development initiative for educational leaders at the college.
