Rate My Professor Jeffrey Mogil

Mogil’s research focuses on nervous system mechanisms mediating the perception and inhibition of pain, with particular emphasis on sources of variability in pain sensitivity, genetics of pain, sex differences in pain processing, social modulation of pain, and the development of improved behavioural models such as the Mouse Grimace Scale and Rat Grimace Scale. His laboratory has identified roles for numerous genes in pain and analgesia and has demonstrated previously unrecognized confounds in pain research, including effects of experimenter sex on rodent pain behaviours. Mogil is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada. He has received the Distinguished Career Award from the Canadian Pain Society, the Frederick W.L. Kerr Basic Science Research Award from the American Pain Society, the Bennet Cohen Award from the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science, and the Donald O. Hebb Award from the Canadian Psychological Association, among other honours. Selected publications include work on publication practices, social effects on pain, pain genetics, and sex differences in immune mediation of pain. He previously directed the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain and founded the North American Pain School.
