Jeffrey R. Stark is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance at Middle Tennessee State University, part of the Jones College of Business. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2014, M.B.A. from Binghamton University in 2010, and B.S. in Finance from Canisius College in 2008. Currently, he directs the M.S. in Finance program and serves as a Faculty Fellow at the MTSU Data Science Institute, contributing to public health projects through data science applications. His prior roles include Assistant Professor of Finance at Bridgewater State University from 2015 to 2017 and Visiting Assistant Professor at Rhode Island College from 2014 to 2015.
Stark's academic interests center on asset pricing, mutual fund performance and strategies, exchange-traded funds and notes, investor attention, information diffusion, and behavioral aspects including gender differences in financial decision-making. He employs natural language processing techniques to analyze market information flows. Notable publications include "Twitter activity, investor attention, and the diffusion of information" with David Rakowski and Sara E. Shirley (Financial Management, 2021), "The use of ETFs in internationally-focused mutual funds" with D. Eli Sherrill and Sara E. Stark has earned the E.W. “Wink” Midgett Distinguished Research Award (Jones College of Business, 2020), WRDS Outstanding Empirical Paper Award (Southern Finance Association, 2019), and Financial Management Top Paper Editor’s Choice (2021). He frequently presents at conferences such as the Financial Management Association Annual Meeting and Southern Finance Association meetings.
