About Jason

Dr. Jason Weismueller is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Marketing department at the UWA Business School, University of Western Australia. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Marketing from the University of Western Australia in 2023, with a doctoral thesis titled 'The Dark Side of Social Media: Misinformation, Negativity, and Polarisation.' Prior to this, he obtained a Master of Science in Marketing from Brunel University London in 2018. His research interests center on digital marketing, including influencer marketing campaigns, the spread of misinformation on social media, political polarization, and strategies to mitigate these issues. Weismueller's work has appeared in leading journals such as Information Systems Journal, Computers in Human Behavior, Australasian Marketing Journal, and Business Horizons. Notable publications include 'Information sharing and political polarisation on social media: The role of falsehood and partisanship' (2024, co-authored with Gruner, Harrigan, Coussement, and Wang), 'What makes people share political content on social media? The role of emotion, authority and ideology' (2022, with Harrigan, Coussement, and Tessitore), and 'Influencer endorsements: How advertising disclosure and source credibility affect consumer purchase intention on social media' (2020, with Harrigan and Coussement). He has secured over $40,000 in research funding to support his studies on misinformation.

In addition to his research, Weismueller serves as Course Coordinator for the Marketing Major at the UWA Business School, managing its strategic direction and operational duties. He teaches a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including MKTG1203 Introduction to Marketing, MKTG3308 Marketing Analytics, and BUSN5003 Data Storytelling. His commitment to teaching excellence is evidenced by his Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) status and the UWA Business School Teaching Excellence Award received in 2025. Weismueller actively disseminates his research through presentations at international conferences such as ANZMAC, EMAC, AMS, and PACIS.
