Janic Gorman is an Educational Technologist at the Centre for Educational Design and Innovation (CEDI) within the University of Otago. CEDI supports the university's strategic mission in learning and teaching by addressing key opportunities including assessment and academic integrity amid generative AI advancements, enhancing student engagement, integrating Aotearoa New Zealand perspectives into learning, curriculum and programme development, and preparing for the future of education through contemporary technologies. In this role, Gorman applies technical expertise to advance these initiatives. Gorman previously held work experience in the finance industry and completed an internship with LATAM CAPE. Gorman also engages in freelance filmmaking, producing music videos for local artists and handling all aspects of production from scripting and budgeting to filming, editing, sound design, and utilizing Adobe Creative Cloud alongside professional cameras, lighting, and sound equipment.
Gorman earned a Master of Applied Science in Science Communication specializing in Natural History Filmmaking from the University of Otago between 2020 and 2021. This degree included the production of the documentary 'Trip Advisor: Drugs in Dunedin Pt.1 MDMA,' which drew from personal first-year student experiences to explore MDMA use in treating depression and premiered at science communication student film events in 2023, including the NZ International Science Festival. Another key project is the short film 'Winds of Change 2020,' produced in collaboration with Wen Qin Ng, documenting an international climate action leadership programme involving University of Otago participants. In 2023, Gorman received the Science Communication Award at the Genetics Otago Postgraduate Retreat, shared with Tim Hore, Donna Bond, Melanie Laird, and Victoria Sugrue. Gorman's Bachelor in Economics complements filmmaking with insights into production economics. These experiences in science communication and multimedia production align with contributions to educational technology at CEDI.
