Dr. Jane Manakil is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Dentistry and Oral Health at Griffith University, Australia, where she has been contributing to dental education since 2007. With over three decades of clinical and teaching experience in dentistry, she holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS, 1985), Master of Dental Surgery in Periodontology (MDS, 1989), PhD, Graduate Certificate in Clinical Dentistry from the University of Queensland, Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and Membership of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Periodontics (MRACDS-Perio). She is also a member of the Faculty of Dental Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Her clinical expertise focuses on Periodontology and Radiology, providing services for complex patients referred to the university's dental clinic.
Manakil's research interests encompass dental education, student preparedness for practice, periodontal disease pathogenesis, the impact of nicotine replacement therapies on oral health, and diagnostic imaging such as cone-beam computed tomography. She has edited several influential books, including Periodontal Diseases: A Clinician's Guide (2012), Insights into Various Aspects of Oral Health (2017), and Periodontology and Dental Implantology. Additionally, she co-edited Academic Women: Voicing Narratives of Gendered Experiences (2023), addressing gender equity in academia. Key publications include "Self-perceived work preparedness of the graduating dental students" (European Journal of Dental Education, 2013), "Reviewing competency in dental education" (International Journal of Dental Clinics, 2011), and "Cell-surface proteoglycan expression by lymphocytes from peripheral blood and gingiva in health and periodontal disease" (Journal of Dental Research, 2001). Her scholarly work has amassed over 287 citations. Manakil developed the Dental Compendium, an online educational tool for dental students, and serves as Higher Degree Research Convenor for dental honours programs. She teaches courses such as Clinical Dental Sciences 2 and supervises students in laboratories and clinics, promoting holistic patient care and excellence in dental training.
