About Jan

Professor Jan de Lange is a maxillofacial surgeon and epidemiologist affiliated with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam through the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). He studied dentistry at Utrecht University and medicine at the University of Amsterdam. Registered as a maxillofacial surgeon, he has served as a surgeon at Amsterdam UMC since 1994 and at Isala Clinics in Zwolle since 1997, where he chairs the Medical Innovation Committee. In 2011, he was appointed Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA). Currently, he is Full Professor at ACTA in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction, Visiting Professor in Maxillofacial Surgery, and chair of the Maxillofacial Surgery department at Amsterdam UMC and ACTA. He heads the Department of Oral Diseases, Jaw and Facial Surgery/Special Dentistry at Amsterdam UMC, oversees the specialist training program at AMC, and leads the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Medical Technical Innovations section at ACTA. Additionally, he is vice chair of the Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group (SORG), member of the Central Medical Disciplinary Tribunal, and involved in postgraduate education and quality control for the Dutch Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Jan de Lange's research focuses on traumatology, orthognathic surgery, dento-alveolar surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, reconstructive surgery, implantology, and methods in oral and maxillofacial research. He has authored over 190 publications, including highly cited works such as 'Clinical and radiological features of central giant-cell lesions of the jaw: A review' (2005), 'Predictive Value of Panoramic Radiography for Injury of Inferior Alveolar Nerve After Mandibular Third Molar Surgery' (2016), and 'A systematic review on outcomes in obstructive sleep apnea patients treated with mandibular advancement devices' (2021). Recent publications include 'Trauma and TMD: The association between orofacial trauma and temporomandibular disorders' (2026) and 'Splintless maxillomandibular advancement for edentulous sleep apnoea patients' (2025). With thousands of citations, his work has influenced advancements in maxillofacial surgery. He frequently delivers national and international lectures on topics like distraction osteogenesis and complex mandibular fractures.
