About Jamie
Dr. Jamie Cross is Senior Lecturer in Aviation in the School of Engineering and Built Environment at Griffith University, based at the Nathan Campus in Henry Smerdon Engineering, Technology and Aviation building. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy and brings substantial practical experience from the aviation sector to his academic role. Cross flew as a pilot for a European airline prior to relocating to Dubai, where he joined Emirates as an instructor. He subsequently worked as an aviation consultant for several organizations, accumulating expertise in flight operations, instruction, and consulting before transitioning to academia at Griffith University.
His research specialization focuses on virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR) technologies applied to pilot training and flight simulation. Key areas include collaborative VR flight simulators for evidence-based training, assessment of presence and situational awareness in VR environments, efficacy and challenges of VR systems, and the influence of pilot attributes and skills on responses to in-flight emergencies. Prominent publications are 'Assessing evidence-based training in a collaborative virtual reality flight simulator' (Aeronautical Journal, 2024), 'A Collaborative Virtual Reality Flight Simulator: Efficacy, Challenges and Potential' (2024), 'Measuring Presence and Situational Awareness in a Virtual Reality Flight Simulator' (Journal of Psychophysiology, 2023), 'Using Extended Reality in Flight Simulators: A Literature Review' (IEEE Transactions on Games, 2023), and 'Exploring the role of pilot attributes and skills in response to in-flight emergencies' (Safety Science, 2026). Collaborating with researchers like Christine Boag-Hodgson and Tim Ryley, Cross's scholarship has accumulated 118 citations on ResearchGate, advancing innovative training methodologies and safety in aviation.
Cross contributes to teaching and course convening in aviation programs, including Contemporary Aviation Management (3522NSC) and Flight Procedures III (3540NSC). His industry background informs practical instruction on aviation management, flight procedures, and simulation-based learning, preparing students for professional roles in the field.
